The Importance of Enjoying the Present: Reflections from Smith Lakes and Working in Healthcare

This past public holiday, I had the chance to escape to Smith Lakes with a close group of friends. It was one of those trips that really helps you pause and reflect on life. Catching up, sharing stories, and reminiscing about old times reminded me just how much things can change in what feels like the blink of an eye. One of my friends shared how the last time we all went on a similar trip, he was anxiously waiting for his wife to give birth. Now, his child is already four years old. Time flies, doesn’t it?

The Importance of Enjoying the Present

It’s already October, and it feels like only yesterday we were celebrating the New Year, setting goals, and imagining what this year would hold. And yet, here we are—nearly at the end of another year.

This trip reminded me of a lesson I’ve learned from working in healthcare: the importance of enjoying the present. While ambition and hard work are essential, it’s easy to get caught up in chasing the next goal, the next project, or the next achievement, and forget to appreciate the moments that matter the most.

Working in the healthcare industry has been one of the most fulfilling and eye-opening experiences of my life. In this field, we deal with both the fragility and strength of life on a daily basis. The fast pace, the constant push to improve systems, optimise patient care, and manage day-to-day operations can be intense, but it’s also a reminder of how fleeting and precious time really is.

It’s easy to become absorbed in the hustle, to be constantly chasing the next deadline or working through the next big project. But if there’s one thing that trips like Smith Lakes and working in healthcare have taught me, it’s this: Work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy the moment!

Enjoy the present. Work hard, chase your dreams, but remember to pause, reflect, and celebrate where you are right now. If you’re always chasing the next goal, you may miss out on the beauty of the moment.
