From 1 July 2026, every bulk-billed service in your Practice runs on new Assignment of Benefit rules. Here’s what that actually means at your front desk:
- Verbal consent? Dead. Including telehealth.
- Paper-only workflows replaced with digital SMS and email assignment.
- Claim rejected and the item number changes? You need a NEW assignment from the patient.
- Every signed agreement kept for 2 years. Every single one.
- Sending AoB by SMS? Better have a registered sender ID, or patients see “unverified” and ignore it.

The Assignment of Benefit process for every bulk-billed service. Digital consent via SMS/email arrives, the GP co-signature disappears, verbal consent ends (including telehealth), consent can happen before or after the consult, signed agreements must be kept for 2 years, and rejected claims with changed item numbers need fresh assignment. Day 2 covers all of it, and what your team actually does about it.
