This week, I had one of those moments where things didn’t go as planned. We hosted a webinar, and for the first time, we decided to use a script to make sure we hit all the important points. It sounded like a great idea — stick to a plan, stay on track, and deliver maximum value. But then, the unexpected happened. Technical difficulties disrupted the flow, and somewhere along the way, my script disappeared.
Suddenly, I was flying blind. Everything I’d carefully prepared felt out of reach, and I was left to rely on my knowledge, instincts, and a bit of improvisation. Was it perfect? Not even close. But it reminded me of a powerful lesson: progress beats perfection every time.
When Plans Fall Apart
I’ll be honest — it’s frustrating when things don’t go to plan, especially when you’ve worked hard to prepare. But as I reflected on what happened, I realised something important: no one expects perfection. What people value most is authenticity, effort, and the ability to keep moving forward despite challenges.
In that moment, I fell back on what I knew — my expertise, my passion for helping practices thrive, and my ability to connect with an audience. The script may have been gone, but the heart of the webinar was still there.
Adapting and Learning
This experience wasn’t just about overcoming technical issues; it was a reminder of how important adaptability is in both business and life.
Here’s what I learned:
- Preparation is a tool, not a safety net. Having a script is great, but don’t let it become a crutch. Your knowledge and experience are your strongest assets.
- Perfection is overrated. It’s the progress you make and the lessons you learn that matter most.
- Always have a plan B. Whether it’s a backup copy of your script or a team member ready to jump in, being prepared for the unexpected makes all the difference.
Moving Forward
Reflecting on the webinar, I realised I spent too much time worrying about getting everything perfect and having this script. But what I should’ve focused on was what I do best: showing up, sharing value, and connecting with people.
We’ve already made some changes for next time — like having a clearer backup system for scripts and ensuring we test everything beforehand. But I’ll also go back to what’s worked for ME in the past: being genuine, speaking from the heart, and focusing on the message rather than the mechanics.
If there’s one takeaway from this experience, it’s this: don’t wait for perfection. Whether you’re hosting a webinar, launching a product, or tackling a new project, just start. Things won’t always go smoothly, and that’s okay. Progress is messy, but it’s also where the magic happens.
